Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) has recognized 澳门足彩app with the 2022 National Safety Pinnacle Award, the industry’s highest safety honor, for the second consecutive year and the third year in the past four.
“Being part of the ABC means you’re doing your best to improve your business and your operation. To be recognized as a member of the upper echelon in that giant group of respected companies is very rewarding,” said Lance Simons, Vice President of Safety and Quality.
Statistically, 澳门足彩app is measured against the commercial construction industry based on Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR), which is compiled by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. But TRIR doesn’t tell the whole story, and Simons said he took extra pride in the Pinnacle Award because, like 澳门足彩app, ABC takes a much broader view in judging safety success.
“In the past we gauged our safety performance on Recordable Incident Rate. That is a measure of how well we protect our own people. That's not what we're hired to do,” he said. “So, we developed a Work in Place (WIP) metric. That’s a metric inclusive of everyone on our job sites, including our contract partners. ABC looks at it holistically to gauge how you manage safety collectively as organization, including all the people that may not get a paycheck from your organization. And that's where our measure needs to be. That’s what our clients want us to do.”
By that measure, 澳门足彩app projects recorded in excess of 10.8 million manhours in 2022, a 52% increase over the past five years, for a WIP rate of 0.92, the lowest mark since tracking began in 2014 and a five-year improvement of 36%.

Simons said careful prequalification of contract partners and expedient but thorough education contributed to the improvement. The company’s award-winning SafeMatters Jobsite Safety Orientation program is an invaluable tool and a prerequisite for anyone stepping on a job site.
“When contract partners are performing work on our behalf, we have we have a very short window to help them get acclimated, and understand and adhere to our culture,” Simons said. “SafeMatters is our way to outline the expectations of everybody on a 澳门足彩app project. It’s based on our Code of Safe Practices, and it allows everybody to play by the same minimum set of rules, which means, in theory, you should be able to look out for your neighbor next to you regardless of who gives them their paycheck.”
Another 澳门足彩app program, called “Take 5” craft engagements, regularly sends members of upper management to job sites to talk with craftsmen about their training and safety habits. As gratifying as a second consecutive Pinnacle Award is, Simons often finds the Take 5 responses equally high praise.

It’s different from others we've worked on,’ man that's rewarding,” he said. “Nothing is more rewarding than having a trade professional get engaged by leadership and say they work for other companies and know that on a 澳门足彩app project, safety is most important.
